Programme of the "Research in Germany" Science Tour
The Science Tour started at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU), one of Europe’s leading universities with over 500 years of tradition. The group met with representatives of the university’s Department of Biochemistry and the BioM Biotech Cluster Development GmbH, Munich. In the afternoon, the participants had the opportunity to meet with several directors and group leaders of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB).
On the second day of the tour, the participants visited the Rinecker Proton Therapy Center (RPTC). The RPTC is the first European proton radiation center to offer a complete hospital setting for the outpatient treatment of tumors. The tour continued with a visit to Roche Diagnostics GmbH, the world leader in in-vitro diagnostics, cancer medicine, transplantation, and virology.
The tour group spent the third day at the University of Tubingen. The participants spoke with representatives from the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH) – part of the university’s neurological department – and the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), which is part of the Helmholtz Association.
The fourth day of the tour began with a meeting with leading scientists at the Institute for Interfacial Engineering of the University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology – IGB. In the afternoon, the group headed to Heidelberg for a visit of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences.
The participants spent the final day of the tour visiting the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the largest biomedical research institute in Germany.
